Champion Defeats #1 Spurgeon
Champion Christian College used a balanced attack and a decisive edge at the free-throw line to beat Spurgeon College 86–76 on December 10, 2025 at the Champion Christian Community Center.
Champion Christian led 37–29 at halftime and largely matched Spurgeon's second-half scoring (49–47) to protect the lead to the finish. While Spurgeon shot slightly better from three (6-for-22, 27.3%) than Champion (4-for-23, 17.4%), the difference came in volume and efficiency elsewhere: Champion attempted more shots (79 to 72), won the free-throw battle (14-for-20 to Spurgeon's 10-for-17), and took better care of the ball (10 turnovers to Spurgeon's 18). Champion also piled up 22 assists, doubling Spurgeon's 11, a sign of cleaner execution and more consistent shot creation.
Spurgeon was powered by a standout performance from Raven Ortiz, who poured in 33 points on 12-of-20 shooting, hit 2-of-5 from deep, and was perfect at the line (7-for-7) while adding five rebounds and three assists. Bishop Duffield added 16 points (7-of-16, 2-of-4 from three), and Joseph Allen contributed a rugged 10 points and 13 rebounds, but Spurgeon's offense outside of Ortiz struggled to convert—particularly at the foul line (58.8%)—and the team's 18 turnovers repeatedly stalled momentum.
Champion Christian countered with depth and distribution. Adrian Brown led all Champion scorers with 21 points off the bench, going 7-of-15 from the field and 5-of-5 at the stripe. Kris Barnett added 13 points on an efficient 6-of-9 shooting, while the starting group spread production with Josh Bartig (10 points on 5-of-7), Chad Milne (10 points, 8 rebounds), and Fredtravious Benjamin (10 points, 5 assists, 4 steals). Defensively, Champion made its presence felt with 10 blocks and 14 steals, turning Spurgeon's miscues into extra possessions and keeping the visitors from fully erasing the early deficit.
With no technical fouls assessed, the game's tone was set by execution: Champion's ball movement, bench scoring, and ability to generate stops proved too much, even against Ortiz's big night.
