Tigers Travel to Boyce for Big Win
Champion Christian opened conference play with a convincing 91–73 road win over Boyce on Thursday night (Jan. 9) at the Honeycutt Center, using a dominant first half to take control and improve to 8–3. Boyce fell to 4–9.
Fast start fuels big halftime cushion
Champion Christian set the tone early, pouring in 48 first-half points while holding Boyce to 27. The visitors shot efficiently and consistently generated good looks, building a 21-point halftime lead that proved too much to overcome.
Boyce responded with a much better second half (46 points), but Champion Christian matched the push with 43 of its own to keep the margin comfortable the rest of the way.
Balanced scoring and efficient shooting
Champion Christian finished at 50.7% (36-of-71) from the field and hit 9 threes (37.5%), pairing that with solid ball movement (20 assists) to repeatedly break down Boyce's defense.
Cam Parker led the way with 21 points, knocking down 5-of-9 from three and adding 5 assists. Trevor Vertiz added 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting, while Kris Barnett scored 14 in just 22 minutes. Fred Benjamin chipped in 11 points and 5 assists.
The bench made a real impact, especially Josh Bartig, who posted 14 points and 8 rebounds and was disruptive defensively with 4 steals.
Rebounding edge and free-throw gap
Champion Christian also won the rebounding battle 46–40, including 11 offensive boards, creating extra possessions that helped maintain separation even when Boyce's offense improved after halftime.
At the line, Champion Christian was sharp (10-of-12, 83.3%), while Boyce struggled (4-of-9, 44.4%), leaving points on the board in a game where they needed every opportunity to close the gap.
Boyce's second-half surge falls short
Boyce shot 41.3% overall and 25.0% from three (7-of-28). Josh Sangalli led Boyce with 20 points despite a tough shooting night (9-of-23, 1-of-8 from three). Caleb Hawley was strong inside with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 blocks.
Off the bench, Ben Cox provided a major spark, drilling 5-of-8 from deep on his way to 15 points, helping Boyce win the second half—but the early deficit was too steep.
By the numbers
- Halftime: Champion Christian 48, Boyce 27
- Final: Champion Christian 91, Boyce 73
- Assists: Champion Christian 20, Boyce 12
- Rebounds: Champion Christian 46, Boyce 40
Champion Christian's first-half explosion, efficient perimeter shooting, and balanced contributions across the rotation were the difference, as Boyce's late push never fully threatened the outcome.
