Tigers Defeat Rival Randall

Moore, Okla.

The Champion Christian College Tigers traveled to Moore, Oklahoma to take on Southwest Region rival Randall University in the final regular season game away game for the Tigers. Head Coach for the Randall Saints, Jesse Byrd, was a part (and is still part) of the Champion family, spending nearly 10 years here as a player and on staff, so this is a game that means a lot for both teams. With the first matchup being canceled due to weather, this would be the only matchup between the 2 teams in the regular season. Falling behind by 14 early, and Randall shooting the lights out, Champion was able to battle back and win the second half by 23 to walk away with a 91-75 win.

In the first half, Randall University came out firing on all cylinders, hitting tough shots and playing with a lot of swagger and energy. Hitting a lot of tough shots, and getting out in transition, Champion found themselves in a 14 point deficit, a place the team isn't used to to finding themselves in often. Luckily, the team showed great poise, slowly chipping away, forcing turnovers and taking good shots. A quick 7 points run by Jason Garcia and a 3 by AJ Williams in the last 3 minutes of the first half cut the lead down to just 7 in the second half. Going into the break the Saints held a 47-40 lead, shooting 58% from the field and 7/14 for 3.

In the second half, The Tigers continued to do what they do, playing fast and forcing the Saints to take tough shots. Starting the half off on a 10-2 run, with 15 minutes left Champion had weathered the storm and took a 1 point lead, forcing Randall to take a time out. From that point on it was all Champion, pushing the lead up to 13 with 10 minutes left, scoring 30 points to just 10 for Randall. Champion controlled the rest of the game, and a last second dunk by Josh Walpole sealed the deal for the Tigers. Champion would walk away with the 91-75 win, shooting 51% from the field and 5/12 for 3, and held Randall University to just 8 made shots in the half, and 1/9 for 3.
