A Great Shooting Night Leads to a Win

On Thursday night, the Lady Tigers matched up with South Arkansas Community College for the first time ever. For the Lady Tigers, defense and playing inside, out were the keys to Champion’s win: 95-64. 

In the first half, Champion only allowed 29 points: 13 points in the 1st quarter and 16 in the 2nd. On the offensive end, the Lady Tigers came together working the ball inside out with starting Center- Kamryn Gentry. Champion put up 46 points by the half, going 17-38 at about 45% from the field, 7-21 at 33% from the 3PT, and 5-7 at 71% from the free throw line.

Going into the second half, the Lady Tigers struggled to find their defense allowing South Ark to score 21 points in the 3rd quarter. Though the Lady Tigers struggled with defending, they still out scored South Ark by 9 points with scoring 30 in the 3rd maintaining the lead. Following into the 4th quarter, the Lady Tigers picked back up their rhythm defensively only allowing 14 points. Champion’s Lady Tigers finished the game with a great shooting night: 95 to 64. Champion finished from the paint at almost 46%, knocked down some clutch 3's at 34%, and finished 11 for 15 at the charity stripe for the night. The Lady Tigers were led by returner Justys Irish-Holmes with 26 points- a game high, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Irish-Holmes shot over 56% for the night with 6 of 13 shots made from the 3.

Kamryn Gentry finished behind Irish-Holmes with a double-double: 18 points and 16 rebounds with 4 blocks. Gentry shot 8-11 from the field and went 2-2 from the 3 PT. Aaliyiah Clark chimed in with 15 points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds. Both Tori Hayes and Alysia Pickett added 8 points and 4 rebounds and Pickett with 10 assists. Freshman, Apryl Llanes chipped in with 9 points as well.
